Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Make the hibiscus syrup

Stir 1 cup water and 1 cup sugar together until the sugar has dissolved, then add ½ cup dried hibiscus flowers and let the syrup steep. Drain the flowers out and let the syrup cool completely before you use it. It will be a deep, jewel red.

  2. Load the Charcoal Citrus vessel

The ingredient list is the 4 serving batch: pour the orange juice, honey, lemon juice, pineapple juice, and water into the first vessel and stir gently. For 2 servings, use 1 cup orange juice, 2½ tablespoons honey, 2½ tablespoons lemon juice, ⅓ cup pineapple juice, and ⅓ cup water. For 6 servings, use 3 cups orange juice, ½ cup honey, ½ cup lemon juice, 1 cup pineapple juice, and 1 cup water.

  3. Load the Hibiscus Hex vessel

Pour the grapefruit citrus soda and ⅔ cup of the cooled hibiscus syrup into the second vessel. For 2 servings, use 13 ounces of soda and ⅓ cup syrup. For 6 servings, use 40 ounces of soda and 1 cup syrup.

  4. Run both vessels together

Press the DUAL button in the center of the control panel to start SLUSHASSIST in both vessels. The machine senses what is in each vessel for the first 10 to 15 minutes and sets the texture itself, showing blue on the temperature range. After that, the temperature buttons let you nudge either side colder or warmer. Small batches finish in under 20 minutes, medium batches in under 35, and large batches in under 40.

  5. Serve the two brews

Fill each cup about three quarters full. Garnish with rose petals and a chili lime rim and serve immediately, one golden cup and one red one.

Where the calories live

The honey brings the biggest share of the calories here, about 29 percent of the batch, with the grapefruit citrus soda next in line.

The bright spot

The fruit in the mix brings natural sweetness and real flavor, plus the vitamin C you see on this panel.

Want a lighter pour

Pour a smaller glass and top it with sparkling water. The flavor stretches and the landing gets gentler.

Frequently asked questions

What are the batch sizes for each vessel?

Charcoal Citrus, for 2 servings: 1 cup (240 ml) orange juice, 2½ tablespoons honey, 2½ tablespoons lemon juice, ⅓ cup (80 ml) pineapple juice, ⅓ cup (80 ml) water. For 4 servings: the ingredient list. For 6 servings: 3 cups (710 ml) orange juice, ½ cup (170 g) honey, ½ cup (120 ml) lemon juice, 1 cup (240 ml) pineapple juice, 1 cup (240 ml) water. Hibiscus Hex, for 2 servings: 13 ounces (385 ml) grapefruit citrus soda and ⅓ cup (80 ml) syrup. For 4 servings: 27 ounces (800 ml) soda and ⅔ cup (160 ml) syrup. For 6 servings: 40 ounces (1.2 L) soda and 1 cup (240 ml) syrup.

What does SLUSHASSIST actually do?

Instead of picking a preset and a temperature yourself, the machine reads the mixture in each vessel for the first 10 to 15 minutes and sets the freezing texture on its own, showing blue on the temperature range when it has locked in. You can still adjust with the temperature buttons afterward.

Can I make the hibiscus syrup ahead?

Yes, and it is the smart way to do it, since the syrup has to be fully cool before it goes in the vessel. Keep leftover syrup in a sealed jar in the fridge and use it to sweeten iced tea, lemonade, or a second batch of Hibiscus Hex.

Is there alcohol in either brew?

No. Both vessels are alcohol free as written: citrus juices and honey on one side, grapefruit soda and hibiscus syrup on the other. They are party drinks everyone at the table can pour.
